Demand for BYOD IT Skills is Sweeping the Industry

With the explosion of the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend in the workplace has come an onslaught of changes as well as mobile security risks. It’s no wonder that IT pros who have BYOD implementation skills are in high demand.

As the CEO of Janco Associates, Inc., a management consulting firm, recently stated: “If you have knowledge and ability to work with BYOD, either in implementation, support or development, this increases your value. It’s the hot skill of the day.”

The BYOD and enterprise mobility market is expected to grow by 15 percent annually over the next three years to reach $181 billion by 2017. And BYOD has had an impact on a wide range of IT positions, from help desk to mobile app development to security and compliance. For example:

  • App developers are being tasked with redesigning Web applications so that information can be rendered on smartphones and tablets in an array of screen sizes.
  • Cloud services are gaining in popularity due to BYOD, and BYOD has reinvigorated the virtual desktop concept.
  • Mobile device management (MDM) is predicted to become a $1.6 billion industry in 2014, so IT workers with MDM skills are in a good position.
  • Jobs like mobile security specialist, mobile device support specialist, mobility admin and mobility project manager are becoming increasingly popular.
  • Based on a Cicso report, nearly 70% of IT professionals say that the unauthorized use of company programs has led to a large portion of their company’s data loss incidents. which means a great need for IT professionals who can securely integrate location technology and other systems.
  • The increased network traffic BYOD solutions produce requires a lot of troubleshooting.

As for the near future? Entire architectures may have to be redesigned to support BYOD because it’s currently assumed that every device can be compromised. And BYOD-related certifications should also be coming soon. Certifications typically trail a hot job skill by two to three years, and BYOD has been mandatory for a couple of years.
