In a down job market, employers can take their time hiring. Leisurely reference checks, testing, and multiple rounds of interviews are all possible when even the best candidates are hungry. But the IT industry is rebounding, and top tech talent no longer has to wait around for you to make up your mind. Here’s how to streamline your process so that the best candidates don’t slip away.
1) Know what you want. The hiring process goes faster when you can cast a very specific net in a very specific direction. Make a list of any skills or certifications that are non-negotiables, plus any “wants” that are desirable but not necessarily deal-breakers. Be sure to include “soft” attributes as well, such as attitude, flexibility and reliability. For example, if the position requires heavy client interaction, then good people skills are a must.
2) Be aware of your budget. There’s nothing more frustrating than to get deep into the hiring process, only to find out that the compensation being offered is not on par with a candidate’s desired salary. The prospect leaves disappointed, and you have to start all over. Work out ahead of time what you can afford to pay for a position, taking into account any benefits or perks that you can offer, such as insurance, additional paid time off, flex time or days working from home.
3) Limit the number of interviews. Unless you are hiring for a very senior position, put a stop to the parade of interviews. For most positions, a follow-up interview with a direct supervisor and a potential colleague should suffice after the initial interview with the hiring manager. Too many people interviewing can mean too many (often unqualified) opinions, resulting in a muddy, drawn-out process that has little or no benefit to either the company or the candidate.
4) Utilize technology. Take advantage of any and all technology that can help. Software that manages the hiring workflow can replace paper checklists, and an open system allows interested parties within the company to check and see what stage a particular candidate has reached in the hiring process. Many of these systems are equipped with options for automatic email or text notifications, to alert you to things such as completion of a background check or drug screening, or to communicate with job applicants in regards to scheduling interviews or next steps.
