Communicating Your Value During a Job Search

You know you’re a great employee: skilled, loyal and eager to help a company succeed. But how can you prove this to employers?

Have you ever heard the term “elevator pitch” or “elevator speech?” What that means in this situation is, if you were alone in an elevator with the hiring manager for your dream job, what would you say to convince him you’re the person he wants to hire, in 60 seconds or less?

Now, chances are, you’re not actually going to have that elevator experience, but you really do need to focus on pitching your value to potential employers in three other areas.

  • On your resume: Illustrate your achievements by explaining the challenges or situations you faced, the actions you took to address or handle them and the great results you got. Communicate exactly what you’re capable of bringing to the table by demonstrating what you’ve accomplished in the past.
  • During interviews: The theory is, if you’ve been successful with something once before, history will repeat itself. Share examples of your past successful interactions and experiences to show employers that you know how to tackle various problems and situations.
  • While Networking: Whether in person or online, focus on your areas of expertise. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and your own professional Web site or blog are great places to share your expertise with others. When talking with people in person, be enthusiastic about your industry – enthusiasm is contagious!

Are you ready to develop your personal pitch? Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What specific experiences and skills do you bring to the table?
  • What personal attributes do you possess that translate into results for employers?
  • What core competencies do you use to accomplish results?

When you are homing in on a specific job, do you have the personal attributes and competencies needed in that position?

Taking the time to think about what you offer to employers and figuring out how to convey that quickly and persuasively will help you find your next great job. Or you can contact the IT hiring experts at Triumph, where we’re always available to coach you and guide you on your career path!
