Can You Afford to Understaff?

Sure, it’s tempting to try and improve your company’s balance sheet by keeping your workforce as lean as possible, especially when it comes to IT employees. You may think you’re being efficient. The truth is, you’re actually shooting yourself in the foot. What are some of the consequences of an understaffed IT department?

  • Stress- A smaller staff trying to handle the workload of a larger staff can put a great deal of pressure on your employees. Stress can lead to employee burnout, which often causes people to consider quitting. After all, they know they can find a more equitable workplace somewhere else. And if your employees quit, not only will you have to find and hire replacements, you’ll also have to deal with an even smaller staff until you can get your new employees trained—creating more stress.
  • Limited Resources=Lack of Goal Achievement – Say there’s a technical project you want to launch or an app you want to create. You’ll need man hours—a limited resource that directly correlates to the number of your employees. If you go ahead with the work and your small staff has to put in overtime, that can get very costly very quickly. It would be more cost-effective to hire temporary or contract IT professionals to help you meet your deadlines. While the associated fees will impact your bottom line, it is often much cheaper than paying overtime wages.
  • Stunted Growth – There’s no way around it: you need adequate resources to continue growing your business. If your company has difficulty handling its current workload due to a lack of employees, you won’t have the capacity to take on any new opportunities that present themselves. Additionally, you won’t be able to allow yourself the time to network for new business, hence, causing your company’s bottom line to suffer in the long run.

IT skills and employees are critical in today’s business environment. From security to communications to customer service, IT backs up critical areas that you need in place to be able to set bigger goals and work to achieving them.
