Etiquette Matters! How Etiquette Can Make – Or Break – Your Chances at a Job

Although information technology continues to be a hot industry in a tough employment market, you still have to remember: “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.” Your skills may be top-notch, but you might be sabotaging your chances if your business etiquette isn’t up to par. What do you need to do when interviewing for a job?

Do the Right Type of Research

It’s easy to look up information on a prospective employer these days, but make sure you do more than check out the company’s website and LinkedIn profile.

You also want to get an idea of who their clients are, who their CEO is, and the company’s mission. Try to get a good understanding and perspective on the company and what they do, so you can show knowledge of the organization’s background and your interest and passion for the brand.

Wear the Right Thing

The key to choosing the right interview outfit is knowing and understanding the company’s culture. You’ll strike the wrong note if you wear a suit to interview with an organization where shorts and T-shirts are accepted office attire—or if you wear a polo shirt and khakis to a place where everyone wears suits and ties. Try to visit the prospective employer sometime before your interview and see what its employees are wearing, then dress a little bit nicer than what you see. If a visit won’t work for you, see if your research can help you understand the type of environment and the appropriate clothing to wear.

Ask the Right Questions

An interview shouldn’t be just you answering questions. You need to ask some, too. At some point in the interview, you’ll probably be asked if you have any questions, so have some prepared! At the very least, ask these basics:

  • How would you describe your company culture?
  • How would you measure a person’s success in this position?
  • Who previously held this position? Were they promoted or let go? Or is this a new role?
  • Is there anything I’ve said or didn’t say that concerns you? Is there anything of concern on my resume?

Treat Everyone Right

When you’re on site for an interview, you’re also on display. Every interaction counts. So be sure your behavior is pleasant and professional from the instant you set foot on the company’s property. Hold the door open for others, smile at the receptionist and be courteous to everyone you come in contact with.

End on the Right Note

You can finish an interview strong by asking for the job. If you’re convinced you want it, let your interviewer know. Simply say, while shaking hands “I’m interested in this job. Thank you for your time.” And don’t forget to follow up with a thank-you note!
