Five Traits Employers Look for in .Net Developers

.Net developers are in high demand, but just having the right technical skills and team project experience on paper isn’t enough. Savvy employers look for soft skills, too, such as the following:

  • An analytical mindset. Employers want to see that you are able to think, observe data and resolve problems. You must be able to be given a task and find a viable solution. And not all problems you run into on the job are going to relate to writing software. You may have to troubleshoot customer problems find workaround at a customers site, for example.
  • The ability to see the big picture. Good software developers can’t be focused only on the one small piece of software they’re implementing, they need to see its part in the whole. And you don’t only need to know how to implement something, but also why—and what its role might be in the future.
  • A business-oriented mentality. In other words, you need to know how to understand and satisfy your customers’ needs. Do you have the ability to solve business problems with technical solutions? Can you cooperate with non-technical people and help them to understand what you do?
  • The ability to work on a team. There’s more to being a good software developer than sitting in front of the computer and coding. Participating on a project team, exchanging thoughts, ideas, knowledge and experience can create higher quality, more efficient solutions. In fact, good communication and interpersonal skills are also necessary. In this job, you’ll be reading, writing, and participating in meetings all day long.
  • The desire to expand your skills. Twelve years ago, the hot developer skills were Visual C++, Pascal, Cobol, and Assembly. A short four years later, Java, .NET, HTML/CSS, and server-side tools were all the rage. And now, many applications have moved to the web and mobile devices. If you want to survive and prosper in this field, you need to keep learning. Employers will like to see that you’ve spent time learning outside of work, even if you haven’t had any formal training.
