Software Development: How to Land 2013’s Hottest Job

A hot job is one that’s in demand right now. But the hottest jobs are those that have a future as well. According to a new joint study from CareerBuilder and Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI), the hottest job for 2013 is that of software developer. Since 2010, nearly 71,000 jobs have been added – a whopping 7% growth rate that experts predict will continue as mobile platforms and Big Data further entrench themselves in the tech industry. CareerBuilder CEO Matt Ferguson explains that, “Companies are competing to get to market first with innovations that will create new revenue streams. They want to capitalize on mobile technologies and social media. They want to extract, parse and apply Big Data to bring better solutions to their clients and their own businesses. They need technologists in place who can devise bigger and better strategies, and execute.” Here’s how to get in on the software developer action, whether you’re a seasoned professional or new to the industry.

If You’re Experienced:

• Craft your resume carefully. Put your skills at the very top, so employers can see right away that you have the professional goods. And make your experience on past development projects shine by including unique or compelling details about each item.
• Cultivate hobbies related to software development. Not only can you make contacts that could lead to a job, you will also be demonstrating to future employers that you view programming as more than just a job to get paid for.
• Keep up with evolving technologies by pursuing professional certifications related to software development.
• Don’t stop working. If you’re currently unemployed, pursue contract work, or put in time on an open source project.

If You’re Entry Level:

• Network with other developers. Whether it’s online or face-to-face contact (a blend of both tactics is best), make sure you’re connecting with others in the industry. Many jobs are filled by word of mouth, without a job posting ever hitting the street.
• Don’t be a diva. As Tech Republic writer Justin James says, “This is an industry where you have to pay your dues.” Don’t pass on jobs that you think are “beneath” you, and while you’re searching, give your time to volunteer projects.
