Big Data Skills? You’re in Top Demand!

If you have big data skills and experience, you are a hot commodity in the IT hiring market. Many companies are trying to figure out how to make sense of the huge hoards of information they’ve been able to compile, and they’re looking for people who can help them find useful business insights out of all that structured and unstructured data. If you can show them how you can help them enhance customer service, make processes more efficient and cut costs, you’re exactly what they’re looking for.

More good news? Nine of the top 10 highest paying IT salaries are for languages, databases and skills related to big data.

“Companies are betting big that harnessing data can play a major role in their competitive plans, and that is leading to high pay for critical skills,” said Shravan Goli, president of Dice, in a statement.

Silicon Valley tops the list of highest paid metropolitan areas when it comes to tech talent, with an average annual salary of $108,603 and an average annual bonus of $12,458. But overall, tech salaries saw a nearly 3% bump last year, and IT pros with expertise in big data-related languages, databases and skills enjoyed some of the largest paychecks.

So what are the most in-demand big data jobs? According to a recent survey, you’re in luck if you qualify for one of these positions

  • ETL (Extract, Transfer and Load) Developers
  • Hadoop Developers
  • Visualization Tool Developers
  • Data Scientists
  • OLAP Developer
  • Data Warehouse Appliance Specialist
  • Predictive Analytics Developer
  • Information Architect

One thing that’s important to remember: while the hard technical skills are essential, managers are starting to realize that successful big data projects need people with softer skills, too—like creativity and communication. They want people who can make sense of the data and help transmit that information to the rest of the company.

Also, you may not get a full-time, permanent job in any of these fields right away. Companies are still figuring out the process and are more likely to hire contract employees for smaller projects, until they get a feel for what big data can do and how it fits into their long-term plans. Compensation is still top dollar, though!
