Crazy Workplace Facts You Gotta Read…

As part of my job, I get to talk a lot about employment.  I would like to think I know a decent amount about both local and national staffing trends, especially in technology.  I went online today to try and send out a few humorous stats, but what I found was actually pretty sad.  Just doing a simple Google search, here is what I found:

“67% of U.S. workers plan on leaving their job within the next year.” (Call me…)

“A bad job can make you FAT.  Almost 50% of Americans have gained weight at their current job.  13% have gained over 20 pounds.”

“Wondering why Americans don’t travel?  On average, US workers take only 57% of their vacation days…so they can keep working.”  (Whhhhhaaaatttt???)

“Each year, the average American spends over 100 hours commuting.” (Gotta love RVA!!!!)

“40% of worker turnover is due to job stress.”

disgrutled

“Roughly 10,000 workers per year drop dead at their desks as a result of a 60-70 hour work week in Japan.  The phenomenon is known as “Karoshi.”

“80% of workers don’t like their jobs”

“46% of people will fail within the first 18 months of a new job.  The main cause? Poor cultural fit.” (Agree, and something we actually take into account when matching clients and candidates.)

“71% of workers are disengaged at work.”

The negative stats go on and on.

While initially I wanted to put this out there for a little afternoon chuckle, it’s actually quite disturbing — as all of the quotes are negative ones about the amount of time we all have to work, and how much the average Joe hates it!  I guess as a conclusion, keep your chin up – and keep looking.  And if you love what you do, be thankful and try and help others love what they do!  As Steve Jobs said, “the only way to do great work is to love what you do.  If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.  Don’t settle.”

And to quote my kids, “YOLO.”

Oh, and as always, if you are technology professional and are ready for a change, give me a call.  I have a whole different set of stats that will actually bring a smile to your face.

Happy Hunting,
